4 Considerations When Choosing a Mother-of-the-Bride Gown

If you're the mother of a soon-to-be bride, you're probably getting excited about your daughter's upcoming wedding. Besides being with her when she selects her dream wedding gown, you'll also have to decide on your dress as the mother of the bride. Here are four things to consider when choosing a dress, along with what we have to offer.

1. CONSIDER THE COLOR PALETTE AND OVERALL FEEL OF THE WEDDING

One of your main considerations when choosing a dress for your daughter's wedding should be the colors planned for the wedding. For example, if your daughter has chosen pastel colors, then plan on wearing a dress with soft pastel shades. Be sure to stay away from colors, such as bright pink and especially if the wedding style is more of a muted or organic nature.

2. THE WEDDING SETTING AND SEASON

When choosing a dress for your child's wedding, it's important to consider the setting for the wedding as well as the time of year. For instance, if your daughter and her fiance are planning a summer beach wedding, you'll want to be comfortable as well as look elegant in your dress. A good choice may be a v-neckline or an off-the-shoulder gown. This would be ideal for a lakeside or beach wedding. But if the wedding is scheduled for fall or winter, then make sure you're warm, besides stylish. That's why it's a good idea to include a cape or fur shawl with your outfit.

3. YOUR SPECIAL STYLE

Since today's weddings are continuing to be more personalized, the look you want as the mother of the bride needs to reflect your signature style. Are you known for a simple or bold style? Maybe it's somewhere between simple and bold. Therefore, if you're not used to wearing elegant jewels, having your hair up, or wearing a hat, then don't think you have to do so because you're the mother of the bride.

4. THE TRENDS IN MOTHER-OF-THE-BRIDE DRESSES

Some of the current trends for 2022 include:

Off-the-shoulder gowns

A significant trend these days for mother-of-the-bride dresses is off-the-shoulder gowns. This type of gown can give you a flattering neckline, regardless of your age.

Beading

Today's gowns for mothers-of-the bride feature a lot of beading. Even though beading in formal gowns has always been trendy, it's becoming even more popular now, since there are some formal mother-of-the-bride dresses that don't include much ornamentation.

Lace

Another trend we're seeing is lacy dresses for mothers-of-the-bride. For an exceptionally stunning look, why not choose a dainty lace sleeve that can cover up but still show some skin.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS AND WARNINGS

  • Don't be overly concerned about what's appropriate for your age. Unlike mothers-of-the bride of years ago, today's mothers can choose from a wide range of styles. If you think you look good in a particular dress, and it's something that makes you feel good about yourself, then buy it.
  • Make sure your dress doesn't look like a bridesmaid's dress. Even worse, you don't want to steal the spotlight from the bride. Therefore, don't choose a white or ivory dress or even one with champagne hues.
  • Consider that you don't have to match everything. Although mothers of the bride used to have the same colors for their dress, bag and shoes, modern mothers enjoy considerably more freedom. In other words, you can combine different colors and textures and still be stylish.
  • Don't procrastinate in choosing a dress. It's best to begin looking for your dress at least six months prior to your child's wedding. This allows for possible delays in shipping as well as any alterations that may be needed.
